The Pulpo is Dead!
In case you haven’t heard, the mollusk oracle of worldwide fame, Paul the Octopus, is dead. Paul became famous this summer for his perfect (8/8) record of predicting World Cup matches; we reported (is that the right word for what we do? maybe “rambled” is better) on his prediction for the final in July.
All the major news organizations report that Paul died of “natural causes.” I don’t buy it. Leaving aside the fact that I’ve always found that expression somewhat useless (if I eat 10 artery-sealing McGriddle’s and have a heart attack, did I die of “natural causes”?), there are much more likely explanations for his demise.
Look, Paul antagonized every nation that he picked against, and eventually even burned his bridges in his home country by picking them to go out in the semis. That means that he pissed off Australian, Ghanaian, English, Argentine, German, and Dutch fans. That’s a scary list of countries to provoke (excluding the Australians, obviously). Hell, purely by the numbers, I wouldn’t be surprised if Paul was the most hated German since 1945.
Now, I know what some of you are thinking: “Paul didn’t make those teams lose, he just predicted them to.” Doesn’t matter. We’re talking about sports fans here, and not just any sports fans, but World Cup fans. These are quite possibly the most superstitious/irrational people on the planet (myself included). Thus, someone slipping a little somethin-somethin into poor old Paul’s tank to make sure he didn’t see the next light of day is completely within reason.
So, yes, as a Dutchman, when I read the headline today proclaiming his death, I thought, “He got his.” Then came that moment after harsh instinctive reactions in which you feel a pang of regret; except I didn’t regret my sentiment. Screw the pulpo, he made us lose. Good riddance.

That is the most superstitious, ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Who believes an octopus for that? The pressure!
Oh rest in peace. Poor thing! I cursed and cursed at him during the World Cup because I rooted for the Netherlands. And now I can’t feel anything but sorry for him…
Very funny, but you do prove that conspiracy theories can even be made for the animal kingdom.
It’s funny…how come he didn’t predict when he would die?
http://www.runtobefit.wordpress.com
So he wasn;t a very good psychic, then, if he didn’t see his demise coming at him like a steam train (or a shark, which would be a more fitting nautical analogy).
Nooo!
rest in peace Paul! I just had a funny thought: what if his predictions where true and some casino octopus-napped him to work for them?
Two years of age is apparently elderly for his kind, so I guess it’s not super-tragic. I still feel a bit bad for him, caught up in the irony of predicting football games when all he had were arms.
He’s predicting match scores in heaven now
You’re right…sports fans are a scary bunch to cross. This should serve as a message to all psychics everywhere not to get too famous when it comes to sports predictions. Better to just use your gift for personal gain.

This is the happiest news I have receive today, and it really made my week!!! I so hated him and wanted to cook him for his final game prediction! but it seems someone beat me!!! Bye bye Paul, hope you go to fish hell!
Too much pressure and responsibility for the poor Octopus. He is in mollusk-heaven now, watching re-runs of the matches he was “involved” in. *wonder if he made a good calamari?
I’m with you. This sounds……..fishy.
I am a veeery supersticious WC fan, to the point that I was watching his last predictions as breathlessly as the matches themselves and feeling deflated when he went against my teams…
Wonder what they`ll do with him…
Nooo! I can’t believe Paul is dead! I followed him throughout the WC, especially the finals since I was rooting for Spain and my boyfriend was rooting for Germany. Paul will definitely be missed!
que pena q paul,, aya muerto,,, era un pulpo fenomenal..
Did you see this?
Sushi for everyone!
the best comment ever)))
Awww the poor pulpo, but he had a good life. He had fame and fortune?? Maybe. At least maybe he ate better than his counter parts and wasn’t a meal… Congrats on being Freshly Pressed & very funny!!! It could have been a conspiracy, you could be right I wouldn’t put it past sports fans, they are fanatics!

tsk. so many arms AND clairvoyance…and he couldn’t fend off death. R.I.P.
Brother, I hear what you are saying, but the dirge Paul is not dead. He is still very much alive, and must be stopped at all costs.

All the clairvoyant octopus…perhaps it was an inside job…perhaps he saw it coming…
I am very sad to learn about Paul’s passing. Truly he didn’t have a leg to stand on, but was a great predicter of sporting event outcomes. For that he will go down as a celebrity octpus.
Blessings Paul…RIP my friend.

Congrats Stu on your Freshly Pressed highlight
he will go to football heaven, hahah=]
and btw,he didn’t make anyone lose,he just knew what’s going to happen.that doesn’t mean he decided it…

The octopus may have been assassinated? No!
I never understood how people claimed the octopus could predict the future. I saw it on the news once and thought they were joking, then they had it on another day.
Whatever. Poor Paul. He was a cute little thing.
Oh man, bummer. I wrote a piece on Paul this summer during the world cup,
http://thewesternwind.com/2010/07/07/what-does-an-octopus-know/
Sad to see him go.
Dear Octopus Paul. May you rest in peace. You were the best predictor that ever lived as far as I am concerned. It will be hard to predict the outcome of games from now on. You were a great help!
OMG! He’s DEAD?! D: NO! His Facebook application predicted my ex boyfriend would cheat on me!! PAUL, DON’T LEAVE ME!…
By the way, incredible writing. I fell in love with your style. I shall now stalk your blog muahahaha.
i wonder if he left any heirs behind with those sick prediction skills

he was the one thing that got in my way of a dutch/deutsch final!
however there was no denying his psychic ability (i suppose)….
Know the future, the short-lived.
also..
apparently there is a new French-born octopus named Paul who will be his successor!
thoughts?
we’ll have to see if he can compete with the old paul. i’m not sure how well psychic powers are passed down from octopus to octopus though, but who knows?
yea he got what he deserved…. hahaha
But seriously the Final should have been Germany vs Netherlands!!!!
I would prefer even Ghana or Uruguay in the final than the lame Spanish… Worst final ever… Pales in comparison to the last three.. France vs Brazil, Brazil vs Germany, and France vs Italy….
I think the semis and the third place playoff were more entertaining!
I find this quite funny. Hahaha.
Haha, awesome. I particularly like your point about natural causes, the artery sealing death may be delicious, but not so natural.
RIP Paul!
i think it is unfair using an octupos for a game of betting i mean it caused alot of hate so i think it is creul.
Anywayz i dont go for soccer and i thought it was quite amazing to think he got alot of them correct and go him so rest in peices little man
oh paul– we hardly knew ye–
…i had no idea that an octopus was predicting world cup results until he died. Crazy! Was it just the one time, or had he been doing this for years? either way it’s ridiculous. how is this news worthy?!
Poor multipodal guy…….at least he was good at something

ROFL.
being NOT from any of the countries that you listed, i thought pulpo paul was adorable. RIP
Calamari, anyone? Great post, very fun read.Congrats on being freshly pressed.
I wonder if the he predicted his own death. Besides, mascots are supposed to be cute, not ugly.
I can confirm your story…
Three months ago, a German Operative approached me as I was backing out of my driveway. The following is a transcript of our conversation:
German Operative: “Do you know Paul?”
Me: “Who?”
GO: “Paul… The Octopus.”
Me: “I know OF him.”
GO: “We are willing to pay you ONE MILLION U.S. DOLLARS to make him swim with the fishes.”
Me: “Well… Doesn’t he swim with the fishes every day?”
At this, the German Operative stormed off.
Now I’m left to wonder… What heartless hitman took the job?
I’v heard of Paul who is a magic octopus, he dead? it’s pity!
Long life to the pulpo Paul hahaha its ridiculous, but in Spain is logical that love that disgusting animal
and also the Octopus is very tasty if is coocked correctly

RIP Paul… wonder if he could predict his own end though..
Too bad for the octopus… I wonder if the fans that loved him are mourning the loss of the good old octopus.
My guess is he predicted a Feyenoord win over PSV last Sunday, and couldn’t live with the actual final score
aww… too bad he didn’t make to the next World Cup. he would have made a bigger er… splash
Im so sad.
heneforth all predictions are at sea
Alguem pediu para Paul votar no próximo domingo: Dilma ou Serra?
Dizem por aqui(Brasil) que Paul preferiu o suicidio!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Buy Mr.Pulpo.

Octopus suicide note:
So tired to predict, feel very lonely, hate football
Love, Pulpo
Rest In Peace, Paul. You were quite the funny octopus. But making enemies of sports fans is dangerous. So in your next life, be aware of that. Haha, congrats on getting Freshly Pressed, by the way!
RIP Paul.
May Poseidon bless you
Aww… so sad….
I’m pretty sure there’ll be a Hollywood biopic on Paul soon. Complete with humble beginnings, the rapid rise to fame, the perils of the various nations baying for its blood, and the emotional farewell, with a crescendo of violins by Hans Zimmer & Co.
I’m with you on the “natural causes.” Smells a little fishy to me.
